Install French Doors

Handyman's Frank Gardner had a deck built outside his rumpus room but the only access was via a side door

French doors flood the interior with light and integrate the deck with the floorplan

‘To let in more light and link the indoor and outdoor areas the existing 2140mm wide aluminium sliding windows were knocked out and replaced with a pair of rebated 820mm wide cedar French doors,’ says Frank.

The work was done in stages, starting with removing the windows and adjusting the opening.

‘A new head trimmer was installed to lower the top then a pre-assembled doorjamb kit was secured and the doors attached to hinges on the jamb.’

The DIY job took four days and the final cost was just over $3000 to take out the window then install the doors. To have it done would have cost about $4500 for a tradie to do the job.

Before: The new deck was overlooked by a window and could only be reached by a side door.
